The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, announced the dates for two opening receptions for exhibitions at its Harmony Hall Arts Center in Fort Washington, Maryland.
On Friday, Nov. 1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the community is invited to meet artists of the dramatic and thought-provoking exhibitions “Contextual Remnants” and “Household Economics.”
In ‘Contextual Remnants.” Kristina Penhoet, who has exhibited with the prestigious Phillips Collection in the District, uses handwork methods to create sculptural objects and installations. Her crochet work addresses pressing issues within our current cultural context such as bodily autonomy, an overabundance of information, and societal paralysis.
The artist’s creations encourage the viewer to reflect on human experience.
Penhoet is based in the District and has held artistic residencies and/or fellowships there, Los Angeles and Japan. Her work has been shown in many art facilities throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.
She has also shown throughout the United States and in Brazil and has done several commissions.
In “Household Economics,” Cora Olson creates unique forms and surface designs to engage with contemporary and historic cultural issues, focusing on gender equality in household economics. Olson is a ceramicist whose sometimes abstract mixed media sculptures and vessels feature reclaimed windows, exploring the contrast between materials and aesthetics, reflecting on tradition and cultural responsiveness.
Olson is a member of Arlington’s Lee Arts Center (LAC) and teaches ceramics at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington through Marymount University. Her work reflects the challenges women have faced and explores the dynamic interplay between masculine and feminine energies.
She brings them into balance through her creative process.
The Arts Center welcomes the community to attend the free opening receptions for these exceptional exhibitions. For more information on both, go to pgparks.com/facilities/harmony-hall-art-center.
