Bowie State University President Mickey Burnim has announced plans to retire in June.
Burnim’s decision to stop down caps a 40-year career in higher education, including nearly 11 years at Bowie.
“It has been a tremendous journey of service through my career of teaching and leading, but the time has come for me to transition to spending more time enjoying my family and serving the higher education and broader communities in more focused and limited ways,” Burnim said in the announcement this month at the university’s Fall Matriculation Convocation and a letter to the campus community.
Since Burnim assumed the BSU presidency in 2006, the university has boasted an increase in both freshman enrollment and graduations, most notably a 27 percent increase after graduating a record 1,180 students in the 2015-16 year.
