The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C. reopened at on Independence Day for the first time since it was forced to close during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. The house reopened with a ceremony, including a dramatic portrayal of Douglass’ speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

WMATA celebrated Rosa Parks Day by reserving a seat for the civil rights icon on each of its buses and was also honored with a replica of the bus she sat on. (Marckell Williams/The Washington Informer)

Though Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat about 800 miles away, in Montgomery, Alabama, and more than six decades ago, Metro celebrated her contributions to history 67 years later.
